In the world of fashion and apparel there are a couple of phrases you'll often hear:

Fast Fashion, Sustainability and the impact of Climate Change. 

Climate change is exacerbated by 'fast fashion' which sees consumers buying and discarding wardrobe pieces from season to season or even quicker. There's a constant push from the fashion industry to stay on-trend. What happens to discarded clothing? For the most part it ends up in landfill or is incinerated. There is nothing sustainable about that cycle of buy - wear for a short time - dispose.

At North South Stewart we believe that wool provides a real solution to this crisis. As a sustainable fabric, it's the obvious choice. Natural wool comes from sheep of which there are many in New Zealand. Shearing happens once or twice a year and then the sheep grow the soft fleece right back. Eating nothing but grass and mountain vegetation sheep are a low-maintenance farm animal. However New Zealand leads the world in animal husbandry, providing humane conditions, food, shelter and medical care as necessary. 

Our merino wool fibre is blended with mulberry silk and possum fibre to give it a luxury feel and superior warmth. The possum is an introduced pest, not native to New Zealand, which poses a threat to flora and fauna. The culling program seeks to protect our native forests and native animal life. Using the fibre is a brilliant use to cut down waste. 

Japan has cold winters and we're seeing more unusual weather patterns as the global climate changes. Wool is much warmer than synthetic fabrics such as polar fleece, acrylic or faux fur. You'll be more comfortable with less bulky layers if you add wool to your outfit. 

Also on the topic of enviromentalism, wool requires less laundering than synthetic fabrics = less water usage. Wool does not retain odours in the way other fabrics do so you can air your pieces rather than washing them. It's possible to wear a wool hat or scarf for the entire season only washing it before storing for summer. 

And finally, our range isn't driven by the latest trends. We chose pieces that will mix and match with what you already have in your wardrobe and hope that you will keep wearing them for many years to come. Our quality products will last for years with the proper care. We recommend handwashing and drying flat with a suitable detergent for wool or delicates. Dry cleaning is also possible. Then store them in your closet until next year!
