A Winter Shop with a Warm Heart

My name is Jacqui, and I run a small seasonal shop in Japan called North South Stewart. I’m originally from New Zealand, and every winter I open the doors to share a little piece of home: soft, colourful wool accessories made with care in New Zealand.

The first and obvious choice

We want New Zealand wool to be the first and obvious choice for winter. Japan famously has four seasons, one of which is very cold.

In the olden days clothing was layered to add warmth. Thick padded hanten were worn in winter over other layers of natural cotton and hemp linen.

Convenience, comfort and a more casual way of dressing has meant that in modern times people reach for the least number of cumbersome layers. Featherlite down and synthetic fibers such as acrylic are modern inventions and represent “fast fashion”.

Humans have used natural fibres since the stone ages. Sheep were kept by the ancient Greeks and the Romans dating back to the beginning of mankind ten thousand years ago. These gifts from nature have always been used to protect against the cold.

In cold climate countries such as Norway, Iceland and New Zealand wool is still worn.

Our vision is to once again create a culture in Japan that prefers wool and other natural materials.

About our products

We bring in a small selection of merino + possum accessories in each year.

All of our products here at North South Stewart are designed and made in New Zealand.

Natural materials: 100% fine merino wool, soft possum fibre and mulberry silk, are woven together to produce a fibre that is soft, dense and warmer than cashmere.

We have carefully chosen the designs, styles and colours that suit the climate and lifestyle of Japanese winters, where it can get very cold.

Our items are transitional between seasons and also transition easily from outdoors to indoors. Houses in Japan are cold in winter, we like to add a layer. And we certainly need to layer outside, particularly when using public transport, going from indoors to outdoors.

Purchasing from us directly means you don't pay expensive international shipping rates, customs or duty. We aim to have your packages to you within one to two days. We only display ready-to-ship items on our website. Shipping is direct from our shop in Osaka prefecture.

We are Jac&Tak

The people behind the brand North South Stewart are Jacqui and Takeshi Miyabayashi. We have been married for twenty five years and live south of Osaka. Jacqui is from Auckland.

Although Takeshi is not very involved in the day-to-day running of the shop he is the chief weeder. We love gardening (visit our garden, it's amazing!). We also like swimming and golf.

We're outdoors a lot. But we also hate being cold inside the house so we love wool clothing, furnishing, carpets and bedding.

We love New Zealand and we love wool.

  • What is merino wool?

There are hundreds of breeds of sheep in the world. The merino sheep is a special breed with extremely fine wool which makes it highly suitable for clothing that is worn next to the skin. Unlike other wool, merino wool is soft and not at all scratchy. New Zealand and Australia are the world's main producers of merino wool.

Sheep are shorn once or twice a year. The fleece quickly grows back so merino wool is a sustainable fabric.

  • Possum Fibre?

Our garments and accessories are made from a unique and luxurious blend of merino wool, possum fibre and silk.

The possum is a small nocturnal mammal, not native to New Zealand, but unfortunately introduced. It is considered a pest and a danger to New Zealand native birds, insects and flowers.

The fibre is a by-product of efforts to reduce the population (trapped in a government-sanctioned program).

  • The Factory

We work almost exclusively with a small factory located in Palmerston North. The products are designed and made by the team in-house.

We visited the factory in 2024 and were impressed by the great working conditions (New Zealand has strict labour laws and a liveable wage).

The process is highly computerised to minimise waste and to deliver a consistently high-quality product. Some of the knitting machines are from Japan!

Vision

Every season of your life deserves softness and warmth.

Thank you for being part of this small, quiet winter adventure.
